How can I help a person with
OCD?
Respect the person's privacy and do not disclose to anyone without
the person's express request that you do so. |
Buy them one of our relaxation tools |
Acknowledge and reward ritual control. |
Acknowledge the OCD as an entity separate from the individual |
If an improvement occurs in the obsessive compulsive behavior, don't
assume that your support facilitated the improvement, as this sets
you up for feelings of failure and self-blame if a setback occurs. |
Direct them to this website. |
Even if the person laughs at his or her own compulsion, try not
to make jokes about it yourself. |
Allow the person time to talk
resist answering, but just
listen for periods of up to 10 minutes, then say "Can I respond
now?" before telling them your ideas, feelings and input. |
