Whether or not youngsters
with trichotillomania should be encouraged to cover the damage, is something
that's up for discussion.

HATS OR WIGS? Should I encourage my child to wear a wig or a hat? We don't advise wig wearing for anybody, it can feel degrading and tends to have an accompanying fear of being 'found out'. Kids can be cruel and run off with wigs etc. We'd rather encourage children to accept themselves as they are, and what better role model than parents who accept their children, pulling or not. Ironically, if you accept your youngster's pulling, they are more likely to stop. Hats may not be allowed in schools, but exceptions must be made if your child wishes to wear a hat. Apply as high as you need to go, to back your child up. Suggest bandanas, which can be tied on, to avoid teasing and problems with head cover removal by other children. |
