Teenagers with Trich
Teenagers with trichotillomania face deeper problems than most ... there is often nothing worse than school days, when you're actively pulling. Growing up can be scary at the best of times, you feel out of control of the speed at which things are changing, but when your own behavior is also outside of your own control, it is terrifying. Most teenagers with Trichotillomania fall prey to depression at some time or another and it can be terribly hard to climb out. Pulling is a real comfort at a time like this. Anything that can be done to encourage teenagers with trichotillomania out of the house, is ideal. We have an active teen section on our forums.
If your teenager doesn't want to seek help, there's really no point encouraging them to do so because they may interprete it as though you're saying they're abnormal. Treat them normally and try to adjust your attitude to the pulling, because they could be facing years of problems outside of the home, and don't need their own family against them also. Trichnotherapy has been very effective for many teenagers, but it must be the decision of the teen themselves and not the parent, to seek help.
